Auburn recruiting: which Tiger commits could be on flip watch?

‘Tis the season for decommitments and flips in the college football recruiting world.

As the December signing period makes its way closer, most of the top-ranked recruits in the 2024 cycle are already off of the board. Sometimes that means nothing, however. Decommitments can come out of the blue, while every program is always filing through a list of prospects they aren’t done recruiting, even if they’re pledged elsewhere.

On the latest edition of The Inside Scoop, Jeffrey Lee of Auburn Live joined On3’s Josh Newberg to talk about a pair of Auburn commits that could be liable to decommit or flip down the stretch. The Tigers are doing what they can to hold onto another top-15 recruiting class — per the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Ranking.

4-star IOL commit DeAndre Carter taking OV to Texas

Steve Sarkisian and Texas made a huge splash earlier in the week by landing the commitment of Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei five-star offensive tackle Brandon Baker, the top-ranked OT in the cycle — per the On3 Industry Ranking. Now, as the Longhorns host Kansas this weekend, one of Baker’s teammates who happens to be an Auburn pledge, is set to take an official visit to Austin.

Mater Dei four-star interior offensive lineman DeAndre Carter committed to the Tigers recently on Sept. 3. The top-150 recruit is a figurative and literal big piece to Hugh Freeze’s 2024 class, but he’s staying true to his word and taking an OV that he set before his commitment. Lee sees reason for there to be at least some concernment on the Plains.

“A little concerned,” Lee said when asked how Auburn fans should feel about Carter’s upcoming visit. “Anytime a commitment takes an official visit to another school I think there’s reason to be concerned. If you want to look at the bright side on this, DeAndre Carter had planned this visit before he committed to Auburn … he gave (Texas) his word that he was going to visit for this game and he’s holding to it.”

Carter took his OV to Auburn in June, then followed with an unofficial at the end of July that eventually led to his commitment. The Longhorns now have a chance to swing big with the lineman and try to bring him into a loaded class that now features his teammate in the trenches.

Auburn should “keep an eye on” 4-star ATH Jalewis Solomon

Ellaville (Ga.) Schley County four-star athlete Jalewis Solomon is scheduled to return to Auburn for the always-anticpated Iron Bowl at the end of the season, but Lee sees the Tiger pledge as one to watch when it comes to potential flip targets.

Solomon’s commitment to Auburn wasn’t totally out of the blue, as the Tigers were in the running, but it appeared as though South Carolina would be the eventual destination for the Peach State product. Some late decisions proved otherwise.

“He went from South Carolina, then he flipped to Auburn before the announcement. He went back to South Carolina about 15 minutes before the announcement. Then, his family was late to the announcement, delayed it an hour and then he went back to Auburn, committed to Auburn,” Lee said. “He was so unsure, they were so even the day of his announcement — he’s certainly a guy you want to keep an eye on moving forward.”

South Carolina and Florida State each had Solomon on campus for official visits in June, while the in-state Georgia Bulldogs had him on campus repeatedly. Getting to that late November OV on the Plains will be a big checkmark for the Auburn staff.
