Auburn wide receiver Jay Fair plans to enter the transfer portal, according to a tweet from On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

Fawcett tweeted Fair’s intended plans on Saturday afternoon, writing:

“BREAKING: Auburn WR Jay Fair plans to enter the Transfer Portal, he tells @on3sports. The 5’11 186 WR was a 2 year starter for the Tigers 2nd on the team in yards & receptions, averaged 11 yards per catch Will have 2 years of eligibility remaining.”

Fair spent two seasons with the Tigers after committing there out of the 2022 class. In that 2022 class, Fair rated as a three-star recruit, per the On3 Industry Rankings. He was also slotted as the No. 87 wide receiver and No. 83 recruit out of Texas for his cycle.

Of note: Fair had been dealing with some sort of injury during a portion of spring practice, Hugh Freeze shared to reporters after practice one day.

The transfer portal giveth and taketh, and this time leads to the exit of a receiver who put up 324 yards and two touchdowns last fall. However, there could be brighter news coming down the pipeline soon in the WR room.

Auburn to get visit from transfer WR

Optimists among the Tiger fanbase could chalk the Fair loss up as a sign that Auburn could be in play for Penn State wideout KeAndre Lambert-Smith.

The rising fifth-year senior led the Nittany Lions with 53 catches for 673 yards and four touchdowns in 2023. AuburnColoradoGeorgiaUSC and West Virginia were among the teams who contacted the wide receiver. Lambert-Smith, who is 6-foot-1 and 184 pounds, leaves a Penn State team looking to make the first edition of the 12-team College Football Playoff.

A source tells On3 that Lambert-Smith will visit Auburn from Thursday to Saturday. He will close out the weekend traveling to College Station, visiting Texas A&M from Saturday to Monday.

Auburn has a talented and young wide receiver room led by Cam Coleman. Adding Lambert-Smith would give the Tigers a veteran in the locker room with leadership. The only question mark is the quarterback position, as Payton Thorne struggled in Year 1 with Auburn.

His departure opens a big hole in the Penn State wide receiver room. Quarterback Drew Allar finished Year 2 with the Nittany Lions with 2,631 passing yards and 25 touchdowns and two interceptions. He also struggled in big moments against Michigan and Ohio State.
