Boise State reportedly hired former NFL head coach Dirk Koetter as the new offensive coordinator, according to Jay Trust of KTVB.

Two years ago, Koetter served as an offensive analyst in 2022 and the interim offensive coordinator. New head coach Spencer Danielson now has his man in an official capacity, running the offense.

Koetter was the head coach once upon a time at Boise State from 1998-2000, going 26-10. He was most recently an offensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons from 2019-20 before returning to the college ranks.

After coaching in high school from 1983-84, Koetter went to San Francisco State as the OC (1985), UTEP (1986-88), Missouri (1989-93), Boston College (1994-95) and Oregon (1996-97) before becoming a head coach.

Following his time at Boise State, Koetter became the head coach at Arizona State (2001-06). He finished his time there with a 40-34 record, going 2-2 in bowl games.

That’s when he moved onto the NFL as an offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2012, he took the OC job with Atlanta Falcons.

It would only be two more years until Koetter became an NFL head coach. He was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC in 2015 before becoming the head coach in ’16.

After a 9-7 season, missing the playoffs, Koetter went 5-11 each of the next two years and was fired. That’s when he rejoined the Falcons and eventually came back to college with Boise State.

Spencer Danielson hired as Boise State head coach

Koetter joins a young gun in Danielson, who was elevated from interim to permanent head coach after helping Boise State to a Mountain West title.

“I am excited to announce Spencer Danielson as the next head coach of Boise State football,” AD Jeremiah Dickey said. “I value process over results. As exciting as it was to win the last three games and reclaim the conference championship, from the standpoint of hiring a head coach, it was more exciting to me to hear Spencer’s vision for the future and how he is going to approach the job full time.

“I am grateful for the work of our search committee to ensure we made the best decision for our student-athletes and Bronco Nation. I am extremely confident Spencer is an elite leader, a man of great substance and a rising star in the coaching profession who will lead Boise State football to a bright future.”
