Provo (Utah) Timpview four-star defensive lineman Siale Esera has committed to BYU. He chose the Cougars over programs including Michigan, Michigan State, Stanford, USC and Utah. The 6-foot-2.5, 260 pound prospect revealed his decision at LaVell Edwards Stadium ahead of No. 21 BYU’s game against No. 9 Baylor.

Esera is the No. 393 overall prospect and No. 46 defensive lineman in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 4 player in Utah.

“… I want to thank all the Universities that offered me and for believing and seeing the value in me,” Esera wrote in a message posted on social media. “With that being said I would like to announce that for the next 3-4 years I will be continuing my education and sports career at BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY! GO COUGS!!”

What Esera’s commitment means for BYU’s 2023 class

BYU’s 2023 recruiting class currently contains 15 commitments. Esera is the group’s third defensive lineman alongside Lehi (Utah) Skyridge three-star Stanley Raass and Glenpool (Okla.)’s Andrew Heinig.

The Cougars now have two four-star commits in Esera and Mesa (Ariz.) Red Mountain tight end Jackson Bowers, the No. 326 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus. Following Esera’s commitment, BYU’s 2023 class ranks No. 59 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings.

Esera is the Cougars’ first commitment this month. In August, the program landed four pledges from prospects including Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon three-star wide receiver Josiah Phillips. BYU also added six combined commitments in June and July, including Bowers and Lakewood (Wash.) Lakes three-star defensive lineman Leo Pulalasi.

The Cougars’ class now contains eight prospects from Utah. Three of them — Esera, Springville (Utah) three-star quarterback Ryder Burton and Provo (Utah) Timpview three-star athlete Pokaiaua Haunga — are top-15 players in the state, according to the On3 Consensus.

Esera has an On3 NIL Valuation of $8.1K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
