When Clemson defensive lineman Bryan Bresee returns to the team this week, he will find a box of letters with the Louisiana Tech logo in the top left corner waiting for him.

Bresee did not play Saturday as the Tigers faced Louisiana Tech due to the passing of his younger sister, Ella, from brain cancer. Although the Bulldogs weren’t able to offer their condolences in person, they still wanted him to know he was in their thoughts.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney revealed in a postgame interview that not only did Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Cumbie write a personal note to Bresee, but also had each of his players and coaches pen letters to the family.

“A picture is worth 1,000 words, even when there are no words,” Clemson football wrote on Twitter, along with a photo of the letters written to Bresee. “These are hand-written letters from every member of @LATechFB’s team to the Bresee family. Football is family, and we’re grateful to our Bulldog brothers for this gesture.”

Cumbie also wore one of the “Ella Strong” t-shirts that Clemson players had on during warm ups. Clemson went on to win 48-20, but it’s clear that the results were far from the most important thing to come out of Saturday’s contest. Cumbie and Louisiana Tech’s gesture toward Bryan Bresee is a great example of the power that sports has to bring people together and sometimes help get them through the toughest moments of their life.

“I didn’t know Sonny Cumbie, but he’s forever got a new fan in me,” Swinney said postgame. “Class guy, class act. His whole football team. He came out with an Ella Strong shirt. He gave me a note that he wrote Bryan and I think his team wrote letters. It just makes my heart smile. In this competitive world we’re in, there’s people out there like Sonny Cumbie and that LA Tech crowd. Class group and I appreciate that gesture.”
