At his first spring game at Colorado, Deion Sanders brought 98-year-old superfan Peggy Coppom on the field. She even got the game started by kicking the ball off a tee while Sanders held her hand.

After the game, Sanders said that Coppom was the game’s MVP.

“Peggy balled. Peggy was the MVP of the game,” Deion Sanders said. “She was quick. The first step was unbelievable. She was very physical when she grabbed me and made sure I held her arm. Timely and her kick-off was phenomenal. Went through the uprights and everything.”

“So, I’m glad. She is just a breath of fresh air and she just breathes life into everyone that comes close to her. She’s a godsend, man.”

Peggy Coppom made a huge impression on Deion Sanders, even getting him on board with her cooking since they’ve gotten to know one another.

“She is unbelievable and I’m glad Rick took me over to the crib that one day and we had a little brunch or lunch with her. She had these pecans that were unbelievable that she sent me a bag of. They were like glazed or caramelized or something and I was just killing those things and she remembered that,” Sanders said.

“She’s a gift from God. I’m very appreciative that we were able to do that for her and give her her moment. She deserves it.”

Deion Sanders on what comes next

With the spring game in the rearview mirror, Deion Sanders and Colorado are looking forward. As Sanders explained, it’s only the beginning of a new era.

“Well, this is the genesis of the new era, the new thing. This was the genesis, this was the beginning of everything and the direction that we go right now,” Sanders said.

“You all know that we’re gonna move on from some of the team members. We’re gonna reload and get some kids that we really identify with. This process is gonna be quick, it’s gonna be fast. But we are gonna get it done…We are gonna roll.”

That includes hitting the recruiting trail and reloading in the transfer portal.

“I love it. Love every darn minute of it. I sat in all three seats. I was a kid that was recruited. And I was the parent sitting by the kid when my sons were being recruited. Now I’m the coach recruiting the kid, talking to the parent, and talking the God’s honest truth. No game whatsoever, straight up.”
