Urban Meyer didn’t mince words about Deion Sanders and Colorado going into the 2023 season. The former Ohio State coach observed the Buffaloes this offseason and came away impressed.

Sanders went through a well-documented roster overhaul through the transfer portal and recruiting. With few returning players from the 2022 1-11 squad, Sanders’ team looks like it is boom or bust.

Meyer detailed his observations of Sanders and Colorado ahead of the fall.

“I mean, I’ve known Deion Sanders a long time,” Meyer said on The Herd. “I’ve always loved Deion Sanders. I respect him, we get along. I called him up, I was out west, we have you in the first two games. He was more than gracious to have me out.

“The most underrated people, obviously got your players, the most underrated people in football are the assistant coaches. And he’s hired really good coaches. I went to the meetings and I watched the practice, they have I believe 70 new players.”

Meyer came up with a new phrase to describe Sanders and Colorado’s team going into the season, and it’s pretty good.

“So I call this thing that grand experiment and I’m telling you, Colin, I mean, that was not what I expected,” Meyer said. “You know, I didn’t know what to expect. But I saw a very good team. I saw talented players, his son (Shedeur Sanders) is an excellent quarterback.

“They got Travis Hunter … I looked at Prime and I said man, I’ve had one of those called ‘Percy Harvin.’ I just pushed him to the side, you don’t need to practice him much longer. He’s that good. The thing they’re lacking Colin, is depth. If they can stay healthy, they have a tough schedule, they’re gonna make some waves in the Pac-12.”

Many don’t think Sanders and Colorado can win big this season, but will at least show marked improvement.

Sanders was asked about his expectations for year one at Colorado and he explained that winning is the standard.

“To win, to win,” Sanders said. “To win, develop, get these guys to the next level, and help them to be men, not boys.

“That’s my expectation and we’re going to eclipse that. We’re going to win. We’re going to win. We’re going to win. I don’t know how to say that, wish I could say it in several different languages, but we’re going to win.”
