Elite 11 Video: Regional Update with Josh Newberg and Brian Stumpf

Florida State three-star quarterback commit Tramell Jones hasn’t drawn some of the same accolades as his fellow finalists at this summer’s upcoming Elite 11 Finals.

But the Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin continues to put together strong performances on the field — both on Friday nights and in camp settings. Competing against a number of higher-ranked quarterbacks last month at the Elite 11 Regional in Oxford, Mississippi, he outshined them all. And along with that came an invite to the most prestigious passing camp in the country.

According to Brian Stumpf, Elite 11’s head of events, Jones was without a doubt the best quarterback on the field that day.

“He’s so consistent, and he’s so polished,” Stumpf told On3’s Josh Newberg on Wednesday. “I talked about this earlier with Keelon Russell — he plays with great receivers. And you mentioned Jaime Ffrench for Tramell. But he’s in this format [at Elite 11] where it’s just him that day, and he was in a group with some top quarterbacks there in Oxford. And he dominated that camp from drill one to drill 12 as we go through our stations. We rarely, when we circle up with our 5-6 lead coaches at the end of the event, do we have a consensus of ‘This was the top guy at my station.’ And that was Tramell Jones at Oxford regional.”

Jones ranks outside the range for blue-chip prospects in the On3 Industry Ranking as the nation’s No. 30 quarterback.

But he showed why Florida State wanted him early in his recruiting process during his regional performance.

“Really an outstanding performance, and he’s not a guy — you referenced his recruiting rankings — that is up in the top five or 10 for probably anybody at this point,” Stumpf added. “But from what we’ve seen thus far on the tour this spring, his camp performance has to rank among the top two or three.”

Rival Florida working hard to flip Jones from FSU

According to Jones, the in-state Gators are heavily pursuing him at the moment.

‘I would say pretty hard,” Jones told GatorsOnline’s Keith Niebuhr. “Pretty hard. Coach Napier and Coach O’Hara, they reach out to me every day. Text me every day.”

Florida missed out on four-star passer Ryan Montgomery, but according to Jones, they’ve made a move with him thanks to those two aforementioned visits.

“Yes, they have. I’m just really trying to take my time,” Jones said. “I’m locked in with Florida State. I did go to Florida, though, and I liked it. It’s just those two (schools) right now.”

Are the Gators a legit threat?

“I’m still thinking about it,” Jones said. “We haven’t set an OV yet. Me and my parents are still going over it. I don’t know yet (if the Gators will get an official visit). I really don’t know.”
