Furman University football player Bryce Stanfield has been hospitalized after suffering a medical emergency while attending an early morning workout on Wednesday, the school has announced.

“The thoughts and prayers of Furman’s entire football program and university community are with Bryce and his family at this time,” Furman head football coach Clay Hendrix said in a statement.

According to WYFF, Stanfield is on life support after suffering the medical emergency.

“He is currently at Greenville Memorial Hospital in critical condition and on life support,” the school said in a message to students, per WYFF.

Bryce Stanfield is a 6-foot-2, 268 pound senior from Georgia. He appeared in all 13 games last season and helped Furman reach the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs.

Stanfield finished the 2023 season with 13 tackles, 4 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Few details are out there about just what Stanfield is dealing with. Furman sent the following note to students, according to WYFF.

“We encourage you to seek out places to talk and to offer care for one another. … While the impulse to gather at the hospital is understandable, because of limited space and the fact that only his family will be able to be with Bryce, we ask that you not visit at this time. The chapel sanctuary will be open until 11:30 p.m. for a quiet place for prayer as will the chapel student lounge on the lower level.”

Furman is the oldest private school in South Carolina. It was founded in 1826. The University has 18 Division I sports, including football and basketball.

The Paladins finished the 2023 season with a 10-3 (7-1) record. Furman nearly advanced to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs, before falling to Montana in overtime.

The basketball program is only 12-12 in 2023-24, but the Paladins are coming off of a special season.

Furman upset Virginia in last year’s NCAA Tournament, beating the Cavaliers by one point to advance to the round of 32, before falling to San Diego State.

The full Furman football schedule for the 2024 season has been released.

Furman will open the season at Ole Miss on Aug. 31 in what will be a huge opportunity for the program against an SEC power.

The Paladins are also set to play Charleston Southern, Stetson, William & Mary, Samford, The Citadel, Chattanooga, Western Carolina, VMI, Wofford, East Tennessee State and Mercer during the 2024 season.
