Georgia guard Jabri Abdur-Rahim plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, but will also test the NBA Draft waters this spring. On3’s Jamie Shaw confirmed Abdur-Rahim entered the portal Tuesday.

Abdur-Rahim played 29 games for Georgia this past season, his third with the Bulldogs. He finished with a career high 12.2 points per game, 3.5 rebounds, 0.3 assists, shot 37.3% from the floor and 35.6% from three-point range.

Abdur-Rahim played for Virginia out of high school but transferred after just one season.

As a member of the Class of 2020, Abdur-Rahim was a four-star recruit out of Blairstown (N.J.) Blair Academy, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 2 overall prospect in the state, the No. 9 small forward in the class and the No. 38 overall prospect in the class.

He released a statement on Instagram Tuesday, regarding his future plans.

“Representing the University of Georgia on and off the basketball court has been the honor of a lifetime,” Abdur-Rahim wrote. “With graduation around the corner, I have made the difficult decision to explore my options and enter my name in the transfer portal while also exploring my NBA Draft prospects. Although this marks a new chapter in my career, I carry forward the Bulldog spirit within me. As a kid coming from New Jersey, I did not expect to find a second home and fall in love with the people that make up the UGA community.”

Abdur-Rahim was very complimentary of the Georgia fanbase.

“The privilege of sharing the court with my teammates and coaches has only added to the memories and experiences that will shape my journey ahead,” Abdur-Rahim wrote. “Thank you to the Bulldog Nation for your unwavering support. Go Dawgs!”

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.

A player can ask that a “do not contact” tag be placed on the report. In those instances, the players don’t want to be contacted by schools unless they’ve initiated the communication.
