Kirby Smart Explains How Carson Beck Won Georgia Starting Qb Job Georgia Bulldogs Football

The Georgia Bulldogs have officially named their starting quarterback for the 2023 season. To little surprise, redshirt sophomore quarterback Carson Beck will lead the Bulldogs’ offense.

While this is huge news for the outside world, primarily since it defines the direction of Georgia’s offense, things have stayed relatively the same at fall camp. Recently, Bulldogs’ head coach Kirby Smart revealed how Beck and the rest of the quarterback room have taken the news of him being named the starter.

“Hasn’t changed much. I mean, I think he understood. He got a pretty good volume of those reps anyway. He’s done well prior to them knowing that. And he’s done well post-knowing,” said Smart.

“To be honest, both Gunner and Brock have, too. They’ve done a tremendous job of growing and continuing to put the offense in positions to be successful and make explosive plays. So they’ve all done a good job of that.”

While Beck has been named the starter, that does not mean we have seen the last of Gunner Stockton and Brock Vandagriff. With as dominant as Georgia is on the field, the two are likely to see playing time this season should games get out of hand. And it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary if Smart decides to implement a few play packages for either quarterback this year.

The Bulldogs’ headman also explained his decision, highlighting why he felt Beck was the right choice for Georgia. With Stetson Bennett on to the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams, expectations remain sky-high, as many believe Georgia should still be the favorite to win the national title yet again. And of the three options, Beck proved himself both mentally and physically to be the best choice for the job.

While the play on the field will be what keeps Georgia ahead of the rest of the pack, the Bulldogs starting quarterback will also need to be the leader of the team, and Smart admitted he was confident in all of his quarterback’s styles earlier this offseason.

“Carson is a very even-keeled individual. He’s been that way since we recruited him, all the way back to his eleventh-grade year,” explained the Georgia leader. “He’s not a highs and lows, he’s not a real emotional guy. He’s not a real fiery guy. He’s very laid back. He understands his job. He’s very intelligent, but he’s — you know, every leader has their own way.

“He certainly commands the room. I think the players around him understand how bright he is. They trust him. And Carson’s had a lot of reps, a lot of work, they just haven’t all been game reps. So he’s had a huge mass of reps, against a good defense. A really good defense, in ours. But his leadership method’s kind of still being developed.
