Orange (Texas) West Orange-Stark three-star safety Jamaal Shaw has committed to Houston. The 6-foot-1, 180 pound defensive back chose the Cougars over Baylor and UTSA.

Shaw is the No. 886 overall prospect and No. 85 safety in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 163 player in Texas.

On3 rates Shaw even higher. Despite not being ranked in the 2023 On300, he is the No. 66 safety and No. 140 player in Texas, per On3. Shaw also received offers from Oregon, Texas and Texas Tech among others.

How Shaw impacts Houston’s 2023 recruiting class

Shaw, who took an unofficial visit to Houston on Aug. 5, is the 11th member of Houston’s 2023 recruiting class. Prior to his commitment, the Cougars’ group ranked No. 60 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Recruiting Rankings and No. 3 in the AAC.

Houston now has pledges from two defensive backs. They are Shaw and Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Marshall three-star cornerback Michael Patterson.

The other members of the Cougars’ class include Houston (Texas) Klein Forest four-star Parker Jenkins, Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Marshall three-star wide receiver Ja’koby Banks, Harker Heights (Texas) three-star running back Re’Shaun Sanford, Roswell (Ga.) three-star linebacker Jayven Hall and Port Arthur (Texas) Memorial three-star interior offensive lineman Cayden Bowie.

Houston also has commitments from Tulsa (Okla.) Jenks running back Jalyn Stanford, Baton Rouge (La.) Scotlandville Magnet offensive tackle Jamall Franklin Jr., Aubrey (Texas) athlete Jett Runion and Roswell (Ga.) Fellowship Christian School quarterback Caleb McMickle. Franklin Jr. is a three-star recruit and the nation’s No. 24 offensive tackle, per On3.

Shaw has an On3 NIL Valuation of $5.9K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
