Star Indiana Hoosiers freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako was arrested on Saturday night, according to a report by the Indy Star and jail records.

Magbako, who is 18 years old, was booked at 3:16 a.m. Sunday on a pair of misdemeanor charges, criminal trespassing and resisting law enforcement. He posted his bond at 5:25 a.m. and has since been released.

“IU Athletics is aware of the situation,” an athletic department spokesman said. “We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal process, and take further action as the evolving situation warrants.”

There are currently no details available on what led to the arrest.

Mackenzie Mgbako was a massive recruit for Indiana and is expected to have a major impact on the team this season. According to the On3 Industry Rankings, Mgbako was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2023. He was the fifth-ranked small forward and the 12th-ranked player overall in his recruiting class.

For Indiana, Mgbako was the best player in an excellent 2023 recruiting class that was the 16th-best class in the country and the third-best Big Ten class in that cycle. He chose to go to Indiana ahead of schools like Kansas and Duke, among others.

MacKenzie Mgbako has an On3 NIL Valuation of $344,000. That is based on his performance, influence, and exposure as a player. It also gives him the 20th highest ranking amid the On3 Basketball NIL Rankings.

In the On3 Big Ten Impact Freshman Rankings, Mgbako came in second place. His potential impact can’t be understated and now how Indiana handles his future is going to become a key decision for the program moving forward.

John Calipari discusses the return of the Indiana rivalry series

This offseason, Indiana and Kentucky agreed to renew their historic rivalry series. Those games won’t happen this season, but they are set to get played in the near future. The first of those will be played in 2025 and it will run through 2028.

Following that announcement, Kentucky head coach John Calipari shared what the renewal of the series with Indiana meant to him.

Mike [Woodson] and I talked and wanted to do it. We’ve had to move it back because of our schedule. We have one of the toughest schedules in the country every year so we moved it out a little bit,” Calipari said.

“But I think it’s good for both programs and excited to get started.”
