Iowa Betting Scandal

More than a week after starting quarterback Hunter Dekkers was charged in the sports betting investigation at Iowa State, four others are facing charges. The group includes starting running back Jirehl Brock.

Brock, tight end Deshawn Hanika, defensive lineman Isaiah Lee and offensive lineman Jake Remsburg are all facing charges of tampering with records, according to the Des Moines Register’s Travis Hines. All four were starters for the Cyclones in 2022.

A complaint showed Brock placed bets on four Iowa State football games in which he played while using an online betting account not under his name. He played in two of those games — the CyHawk game against Iowa and the game against Kansas State. He rushed for 100 yards against Iowa and totaled 33 yards against Kansas State. Brock also placed wagers on Iowa State basketball 13 times, records showed.

Brock is the biggest name of the group after leading the Cyclones in rushing last year with 445 yards along with three touchdowns. He hasn’t practiced yet this year for previously unknown reasons.

Lee allegedly placed 26 bets on 12 ISU football games, including one on Texas to beat the Cyclones in 2021 — a 30-7 Iowa State victory. In that game, he had one tackle. Hanika, meanwhile, is accused of putting down 70 bets on Iowa State basketball.

Remsburg placed the most bets of the group, putting down 273 wagers, including six on NCAA basketball games. However, none of the games included Iowa State, according to the records.

NCAA rules state athletes who have “cumulative wagering activities that greatly exceed $800” could be looking at a loss of eligibility. Those rules were announced June 28 retroactive to May 2.

The latest charges come nine days after Dekkers officially faced charges of records tampering — an aggravated misdemeanor. A complaint filed in court showed Dekkers bet on a 2021 football game against Oklahoma State when he was the backup quarterback for the Cyclones.

Along with that bet, Dekkers allegedly placed 25 other bets on Iowa State sporting events. Dekkers’ DraftKings account alleged completed upwards of 350 sports wagers total more than $2,799. He could permanently lose eligibility under NCAA guidelines for betting.

The investigation also includes Iowa, and multiple current and former Hawkeyes players were charged with tampering with records on Thursday, as well. A graduate assistant coach was also charged as a result of the inquiry.
