The Kansas Jayhawks have been one of the early surprises of the college football season as they are one of the three remaining unbeaten teams in the Big 12. A good portion of their success on the offensive side of the ball is courtesy of their ability to control the game with a balanced attack. Unfortunately, the stability of their offense took a huge blow on Saturday after running back Daniel Hishaw had to be carted off the field with a serious leg injury. On Monday, Jayhawks head coach Lance Leopold provided an update on Hishaw’s status, saying it’s ‘going to be a while’ until he’s on the field again.

“Yeah, it’s gonna be a while for Daniel. It’s unfortunate,” said Leopold. “He’s played well. He missed last season with an injury. So, it’s unfortunate but Devin Neal, you know, carried the load for us last year quite a bit. You know, he’s there. Sevion Morrison, a transfer running back from Nebraska, and Ky Thomas, another transfer from Minnesota, still gives us a lot of flexibility and depth at that position.”

Hishaw was a part of a dynamic one-two punch in the Jayhawks backfield along with fellow sophomore running back Devin Neal. Before going down in Kansas’ 14-11 victory over Iowa State on Saturday, he led the team in rushing attempts. On the season, Hishaw has ran the ball 44 times for 259 yards averaging 5.9 yards per carry with five rushing touchdowns. With Hishaw likely to be on the shelf for an extended period of time, expect for another sophomore, Sevion Morrison, to step up and attempt to fill the void. Morrison has 12 attempts for 111 yards with one touchdown in Kansas’ first five games of the season.

Kansas RB Daniel Hishaw carted off field, leaves in ambulance after serious injury

It was a scary scene in Lawrence on Saturday when Kansas running back Daniel Hishaw suffered an apparent leg injury in the fourth quarter. He was carted off the field and left in an ambulance as a result.

Hishaw took a carry nine yards before fumbling the ball. But on the play, he took a big hit and ended up leaving the game on the cart due to the injury. At the time of the injury, Hishaw had 28 rushing yards and one of Kansas’ two touchdowns.

The cart came on the field after the play and eventually had to leave via an ambulance, according to 247Sports’ Michael Swain.

Hishaw fumbled on the play and Iowa State defender O’Rien Vance came up with the takeaway to give the Cyclones the ball back as they try to mount a comeback. However, they ended up punting back to Kansas with 5:21 to play.
