Texas visits Kansas this week in a battle between two 6-4 teams both looking to bounce back from losses last weekend. Jayhawks head coach Lance Leipold spoke about what stands out about the Longhorns ahead of their matchup starting with their personnel.

“Dynamic, very athletic, the things that you see, depth, and speed, and the skill level, but I think they’re improved up front from a year ago really on both sides of the ball,” Leipold said.

The Longhorns definitely have dynamic firepower on both offense and defense, headlined by one of the nation’s best running backs in Bijan Robinson who currently leads the Big 12 in rushing yards with 1,158. On the defensive side of the ball, they’re one of the conference’s best units, ranking third in points allowed and leading the Big 12 in sacks, and are led by linebacker Jaylan Ford who leads the Big 12 in tackles.

Texas fell to No. 4 TCU last week in 17-10 defensive slugfest, as Leipold spoke on some moments he’s been able to catch the Longhorns on national television this season.

“That was a battle last week, not everybody plays Alabama in a non-conference game to start the season and that was probably the most I’d watched them,” Leipold said. “Probably the K State game I think was the other one maybe on television because we had played earlier.”

Leipold also spoke to the improvement of Texas’ offense this season under Steve Sarkisian and their ability to overcome adversity regarding injuries to key positions.

“It’s an excellent football team, you can see the difference of a second year with coach Sarkisian and where they’re at and what a great play caller he is. And even though like many of us they’ve had to play multiple quarterbacks, you still see some pretty explosive plays,” Leipold said.

Both Leipold and Sarkisian are in their second season with their respective programs and have both already reached improved win-loss records compared to their first years on the job. Texas reached five wins last season, but notched their sixth victory of this season two weeks ago in a win over a ranked Kansas State team securing bowl eligibility.

Kansas’ turnaround was well documented as they started the season with five straight victories following a 2-10 season the year prior. One of those two wins last year was over Sarkisian’s Longhorns, which snapped an 18-game conference losing streak, as Leipold and the Jayhawks will look to secure a second straight victory over Texas this weekend.
