Kansas State guard RJ Jones has plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to The Athletic’s Tobias Bass.

Jones parts ways with the Wildcats program following just one lone season at Kansas State, as the former highly touted recruit will now reopen his recruitment ahead of the 2024-2025 season.

In his true freshman season Jones appeared in 28 games for K-State, all off the bench where he averaged 2.4 points per game on a disappointing 29.4% from the field in his 8.9 minutes per game. Scoring a career-high 14 points in the third game of the season in a win over South Dakota State.

Jones played high school hoops at Wasatch Academy in Utah but is from Denton (TX) where he was four-star prospect ranked as the No. 89 overall player in the country and the No. 21 shooting guard for the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard still has a very high ceiling moving forward in his college career after being one of the top high school prospects in his recruiting class who showed flashed of elite play throughout his freshman season. As he now joins Cam Carter, Dorian Finister, Nae’Qwan Tomlin, and Jerrell Colbert as Kansas State players who have entered the NCAA transfer portal this offseason.

Wildcats lose RJ Jones, gain CJ Jones

Kansas State losing one of their top recruits in last year’s signing class is not ideal, but adding an experienced player at the same position through the transfer portal surely helps soften the blow.

Former Illinois-Chicago guard C.J. Jones signed with the Wildcats on April 16, and could very easily be an impact player next season after averaging 9.0 points, 3.6 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game the past two seasons.

“We’re fired up to welcome C.J. and his family to K-State,” Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang said. “We had some familiarity with him having played with Buddy (Rich) at East St. Louis High School for head coach Mark Chambers. But C.J. stands out on his own. He is a big versatile guard with great decision-making abilities who can shoot the ball at a very high, efficient rate. We love his size and measurables (6-foot-5 frame with a 6-7 wingspan) and we think he can be an all-conference player as he continues to develop. We’re excited that C.J. and his family have chosen to continue his basketball career at K-State. We know this fan base is ready to embrace and welcome them to this community.”
