LSU had a busy offseason in the transfer portal after first-year head coach Brian Kelly looked to rebuild the roster. The quarterback competition has been among the most fierce in t he country as newcomers Jayden Daniels and Walker Howard compete with returners Myles Brennan and Garrett Nussmeier for snaps.

Following the LSU spring game, which brought spring practice to a close, Brian Kelly provided his latest thoughts on the quarterback competition.

“We didn’t clear anything up today with the quarterback,” said Kelly. “We probably made it more difficult.”

Brian Kelly and is staff appear in no rush to name a starting quarterback with so much depth in the room, allowing the competition to carry into summer workouts and possibly the fall practices leading up to the regular season.

Many of the quarterbacks have talked about their individual approaches to the battle, with a variety of mindsets which all share the idea of a team-first philosophy. Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels also made sure to credit Kelly for being upfront with each one of them throughout the process.

All four quarterbacks had a chance to play early, but the LSU offense hasn’t found their footing yet. After the first couple drives, Kelly revealed his first impressions of the quarterback for the Tigers during an on-air interview with the broadcast crew.

“It’s just a little bit of trying to get them in the rhythm of the offense,” responded Kelly. “They’re all talented. Sometimes it’s execution. I would say that all of them command the offense, they have a good understanding of it. We didn’t make any plays really, so far the defense looks pretty good.”

Continuing, the new leader of the Tigers stated what he was looking for out of his quarterbacks on Saturday.

“I think just getting the ball out of their hands, managing the offense,” started Kelly. “I want to see them under control. Running the offense with an authority. And not really forcing anything. Let the offense come to them, because they’re all talented. They all have strong arms, they all can see the field really well. Don’t do more than what you’re capable of doing. They all have a pretty good sense of that.”

With the game now over and the competition seemingly closer than ever, LSU must continue waiting for the final decision on a starting quarterback in the coming months.
