Brian Kelly releases statement confirming Myles Brennan retirement
On Monday, LSU head coach Brian Kelly released a statement confirming the breaking news that Tigers quarterback Myles Brennan is retiring from football.
Following reports from LSU practice that quarterback Brennan was not at fall camp practice on Monday, Louisiana radio host Kristian Garic tweeted: “LSU QB Myles Brennan is walking away from football, a source has told me. Brennan was informed that he will not be the starting quarterback this fall.”
“We are grateful to Myles for everything he has done for LSU Football,” Kelly said in a statement on Twitter. “Myles is a great leader who has made a tremendous impact on this program, and he has earned the respect of everyone here through his commitment and love for LSU. Myles has always embodied the traits required to fulfill our mission to graduate champions, and we have full confidence those traits will help him succeed at every step of his journey moving forward.”
Brennan was in a three-way competition for the starting job in Baton Rouge, battling against Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier.
Myles Brennan has had a career plagued by injury, including a season-ending one in 2021. Last season, he engaged in a battle with Max Johnson for the starting quarterback job at LSU. He also missed the majority of the 2020 season with a torn abdomen. Prior to his injury in 2020, Brennan was 79-of-131 for 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. He threw for 1,712 yards in his LSU career, which began in 2017.
Injury-plagued Brennan walks away
If the latest report is accurate, it looks like the quarterback race in Baton Rouge is down to two. The Tigers start the 2022 season versus Florida State in primetime on Sept. 4.
Last week, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock said the team was still not “anywhere close” to naming a starter.
“There comes a line of demarcation of we’ve got to get ready to win game one and who gives us the best opportunity to do that,” Mike Denbrock said. “We’re not, as you know, anywhere close to that yet but those decisions will be made by Coach Kelly, obviously, when that cutoff happens. And, hopefully, it’s an easy decision.
“Maybe somebody actually really separated themselves enough where it’s so obvious that the decision happens sooner. Maybe there’s two guys that are just battling each other and it’s awesome–maybe it’s three. The more the merrier at times. But we also got to get ready to play the season and get ready to win football games.”
