Recently, football has not been the main focus of Brian Kelly and LSU. Everyone has been sending thoughts and prayers in the direction of defensive back Greg Brooks, as he dealing with a rare form of cancer called medulloblastoma. The diagnosis was revealed on Wednesday afternoon by the Brooks family and LSU Football.

Kelly was able to provide the latest update on Brooks on Monday, saying he has transferred hospitals. Another surgery is scheduled as well, with Kelly hoping it can be the beginning point of the battle Brooks has ahead of him.

“Greg has been transferred to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis,” Kelly said via the Paul Finebaum Show. “He’s a strong man and we’re hoping that this next surgery allows him to begin the next challenge of battling cancer.”

Brian Kelly appreciates supports of Greg Brooks from college football community

Kelly said one of the best aspects of college football is the community and they have helped LSU and Brooks throughout the process. He said multiple different head coaches and programs have reached out, with Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield being one of them now that Brooks is in a Memphis-based hospital.

A ton of people have been supportive of Brooks and the program over the past few weeks.

“One of the things that is great about this game is how everybody has come together,” Kelly said. “He transferred in from Arkansas and Coach (Sam) Pittman reached out to see him when Arkansas was in. Even this past weekend, Missouri wore the No. 3 on their helmet… Just this overwhelming support for Greg in the football community.”

Along with the announcement of Brooks’ diagnosis, LSU put up a link for people to donate to the Victory Fund. Kelly revealed $100,000 has already been raised as the support has been incredible in just under a week.

Missouri was not the only one to wear a No. 3 decal on their helmets. Arkansas did the same with Brooks being a former player. He played under Pittman for two years before returning home to his home state of Louisiana to finish out his college football career.

LSU will continue to keep Brooks in their thoughts, especially as their on-field season continues with Auburn on Saturday. Brooks was a huge reason why they were able to come away with a victory on the Plains last season, grabbing an interception with just over two minutes remaining.
