One of the goals for Jayden Daniels at LSU is to put on some weight. The former Arizona State quarterback has a plan, though — and he’s in a good spot to pull it off.

On LSU’s official roster, Daniels is listed at 185 pounds. This week, he told reporters his goal is to gain 15 more to get to 200 pounds. He’s working with Matt Frakes, LSU’s assistant athletic director of sports nutrition, to meet that goal and bulk up.

“Dr. Frakes, me and him sat down and made a plan not too long ago,” Daniels said. “Just following that plan. Like Coach Kelly said, building those habits, staying consistent to the process because I think [you] can’t look to far to the results. You’ve got to enjoy the process.”

Daniels added he’s getting closer to that goal, and he found some important resources to help. As it turns out, Baton Rouge has plenty of good options when people get hungry.

“I’m getting there,” Daniels said. “There’s a lot of good food out here, so I’m happy.”

On top of trying to gain some weight, Daniels is gearing up to compete with Myles Brennan and Garrett Nussmeier to be LSU’s starting quarterback. He has plenty of starting experience at Arizona State in his three years with the Sun Devils, and that could be important as new Tigers coach Brian Kelly decides who’ll be his QB1 this coming season.

Jayden Daniels assesses where he needs to improve ahead of fall

LSU had a busy offseason in the transfer portal after first-year head coach Brian Kelly looked to rebuild the roster. Among the most surprising additions, the Tigers added former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels to the roster to compete for the starting job.

During his first media availability, Jayden Daniels discussed where he needs to improve over the offseason to help him secure the starting quarterback position heading into the fall.

“Footwork,” said Daniels, quickly identifying one area. “Really just building the chemistry with the guys. I came pretty late here, right before spring ball. For me personally, just that leadership role, footwork and going through progressions.

“Things like that, just the things that coach Denmark and them had at Cincinnati. Coach Kelly is an offensive-minded head coach. Just being able to go out there and talk to them about offense, about football, that’s probably one of the best things I could have done.”
