Jayden Daniels knows that establishing early chemistry with the LSU receivers especially important for him this spring. A transfer quarterback from Arizona State, Daniels still has plenty of work to do integrating himself into the Tigers offense.

In a recent interview following a spring practice session, Daniels talked about how he feels that process is going thus far. He also gave a shout out to Louisiana transfer receiver Kyren Lacy, whom he already feels a strong bond with.

“I try to build as much chemistry as I can with the receivers,” Daniels said. “Obviously I didn’t get that time with them coming in. I just go out there and throw because the receivers want to see me and how I throw the ball and I want to throw to receivers. Probably one of my closest friends that has embraced me is Kyren Lacy. When I committed, he hit me up and was like, ‘I’m excited for you to be here.’ So we’ve been building our relationship. It’s not difficult, but trying to develop the chemistry with receivers throughout practice is just a step I have to take. When we come back in the summer, we’ll have summer workouts and we can build more chemistry from there.”

LSU is also set to return last year’s leading receiver Kayshon Boutte, as well as Jaray Jenkins and Jack Bech. That will give Daniels ample options to throw the ball to if he can beat out veteran quarterback Myles Brennan for the starting job. Brennan began the 2020 season as the starter, but would go on to play only three games over the next two seasons because of injuries.

Daniels brings three years of Power 5 starting experience with him to Baton Rouge, and seems to be the early favorite to win the job in 2022. He finished this past season with 2,381 yards passing in addition to 710 yards rushing while helping ASU to an 8-5 finish. The combination of that experience and skillset should give him a leg up over both Brennan and freshman Garrett Nussmeier.

But if Jayden Daniels hopes to be named the starting quarterback, he’ll first need to prove his chemistry with the receivers to first-year coach Brian Kelly. The transfer quarterback will get a big opportunity to show that connection when LSU hosts its annual spring game on April 23.
