Maryland is making big changes to their defensive staff. After a change in his role, On3’s Matt Zenitz reports former Maryland defensive coordinator Brian Stewart is leaving the Terrapins.

“Maryland and Brian Stewart have parted ways, sources tell @On3sports,” tweeted Zenitz. “Stewart was Maryland’s defensive coordinator last season and had been set to remain on the staff in a non-DC capacity.”

An experienced coach, Stewart spent one season as the Maryland defensive coordinator prior to parting ways. Evidently, the fit simply wasn’t right for Stewart with the Terrapins.

In the past, Stewart has held multiple high-ranking defensive assistant jobs, both in college and in the NFL. At multiple different stops, he’s been a defensive coordinator, including the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Cougars.

What’s next for Brian Stewart remains to be seen, but Maryland is on the hunt to fill their own defensive coordinator position. After being spurned by Kevin Steele, the job is open, and Terrapins faithful is wondering where their team is going to pivot.

Furthermore, the news regarding Brian Stewart comes on the heels of the aforementioned shocking news regarding Kevin Steele. After agreeing to terms with Steele to become the new defensive coordinator at Maryland last week, Steel has jumped ship to Miami.

For those who follow college football, this sequence of events would definitely constitute as confusing, to say the least. But fortunately, Fox Sports Bruce Feldman reveals some behind-the-scenes workings and information to make sense of it all.

“The Kevin Steele deal shows just how wild the CFB hiring process is. He’d verbally accepted the Maryland job last wk, started working Friday, & was recruiting for the Terps. This afternoon, while sitting in his office at Maryland, he told them that he was taking the Canes DC job,” wrote Feldman via Twitter.

Steele has worked at some of the biggest programs in the country, most recently working at Tennessee as the interim head coach between Jeremy Pruitt and Josh Heupel. Before then, he was the defensive coordinator for Auburn and has held the same position at Alabama, Clemson, and LSU.

Nevertheless, the move was a surprise — and one that’ll anger Maryland faithful. Still, the next moves the team makes will determine their future.
