Jonathan Patke, Miami’s inside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator under Manny Diaz, is expected to be hired as defensive coordinator at Incarnate Word, sources tell On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Patke began his coaching career in 2011 at Incarnate Word, working with current Miami safety coach Ephraim Banda. He spent two years at UIW where he earned his master’s degree in business administration with an emphasis on sports management, according to his bio on miamihurricanes.com

He bounced around from Louisiana Tech and Mississippi State in various roles before landing in the Hurricanes’ program in 2015.

Patke joined the Miami football coaching staff in 2016 and served as the team’s quality control analyst for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

He was promoted to outside linebackers coach prior to the 2018 season, where Miami’s defense excelled statistically in several categories including No. 4 in total defense in 2018 and No. 1 in team tackles for loss, passing yards allowed and third down defense.

In 2019, Patke helped coach the Hurricane defense to a No. 13 national ranking in total defense (yards allowed per game), No. 12 nationally in yards per play, No. 4 in tackles for loss, No. 6 in sacks, No. 10 in run defense, No. 16 in red zone defense and No. 18 in pass defense.

In the same year, which was Patke’s first season as special teams coordinator, Miami’s punting unit skyrocketed to No. 30 in FBS in net punting and Lou Hedley ranked No. 26 in yards per punt in his first season at Miami.

Only one season later, Jose Borregales became the first Hurricane in history to win the Lou Groza Award, an award that honors the nation’s top kicker, while Hedley was one of three finalists for the Ray Guy Award, honoring the nation’s top punter.

Patke joins the budding coaching staff at Incarnate Word under G.J. Kinne, who took the job in Dec. 2021 after spending last season under Gus Malzahn at UCF as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
