Tyler Van Dyke: 'There's no more BS going on around here'

Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke can feel a difference in the air during this year’s spring practice. According to the Hurricanes quarterback, this is primarily because of the transition from former head coach Manny Diaz to current head coach Mario Cristobal.

“You can tell the difference, the discipline and intensity that has changed the program so far,” Van Dyke said. “There’s no more BS going on around here… Always have to be on time or you’re going to face some discipline issues. [Paying attention to] small details will help us on the field. We need that standard and we’ve needed it for awhile.”

Diaz spent three years as the Hurricanes’ head coach after spending his first three years in the program as their defensive coordinator and linebacker coach. During his time at the helm, quite a few believed his Miami teams underachieved. And after going 8-3 in 2020 and 7-5 last season, Van Dyke believes there are no excuses for the Hurricanes to underachieve under Cristobal the same way.

“With him as the head guy, with all that talent, there no more excuses. We have the best coaching staff in college football. There are no more excuses to be 7-5, 8-4.”

” We’ve got to be better with discipline and details…. That’s what gets us beat. The biggest thing is player-led accountability. Me and a couple guys are doing that to make sure everybody does the right thing.”

Whether or not Miami does better, worse, or remains the same under Cristobal remains to be seen. However, for the former Hurricane, now head coach, it is an excellent sign that he has his top candidate for starting quarterback singing his praises early in his tenure.

Miami and Van Dyke will get a chance to show off discipline under Cristobal next season, starting with a home game against Bethune-Cookman on Sept 2.

Mario Cristobal discusses the players who impressed him

The Miami Hurricanes wrapped up the 2022 version of their spring game on Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd in MLS Inter Miami’s DRV PNK Stadium. It was the first spring game for newly anointed head coach Mario Cristobal in his first few months on the job as the head man of the ‘Canes. Following the game, Cristobal highlighted a few of the things that impressed him.

“Well, there’s a few things. For one, the venue I love. I love being here. This is really incredible. And again, very grateful for that opportunity and the fans showing up like they did,” Cristobal said.

“Second of all, I think there was some good play at the line of scrimmage from the offensive line. In the run game there were some spurts. I thought Henry Parrish, Jr. and Thad [Thaddius Franklin, Jr.] had their moments. I thought [Dazalin Worsham], you know, all spring long, has done a really, really good job. The tight ends continue to get better and improve, make some plays. We blocked well as well. I thought there were some good plays from some of the linebackers. The secondary made some big plays. At receiver, we were inconsistent. Some good plays at the slot and then outside–we made some plays but you know what, when you have a quarterback like that [Tyler Van Dyke]–he’s making those throws find a way to get the ball,” the Hurricanes new head coach said.

Dazalin Worsham turned heads this spring for the Hurricanes and drew some serious buzz. In 2018, he originally committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide before eventually switching to the Hurricanes. According to the On3 Consensus Rankings for the 2020 class, Worsham was rated as the No. 97 wide receiver prospect in America for that cycle.
