Mel Tucker and the Michigan State Spartans made a touching Signing Day gesture for fallen Oxford shooting victim Tate Myre.

Before announcing the signings of their 20 class of 2022 commitments, the team released a video to announce that Tate Myre would be an honorary member of the class.

Myre, a senior, was a linebacker on the Oxford team and received a scholarship offer to play at the next level.

“We are honored to recognize Tate Myre as the first Spartan Dog of the 2022 class,” Tucker said. “A Spartan Dog is defined not by the plays they make on the field, but by the character they exemplify, the leadership they bring to their team and community, and for extraordinary individuals like Tate Myre, their heroism.

“Tate is and always will be a Spartan Dog. He had an unmatched work ethic, athleticism, and love for his teammates. He had a passion to one day play for Michigan State.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of Hana St. Juliana, Madisyn Baldwin, Justin Shilling and Tate Myre,” Tucker continued. “We will continue to support the Oxford community any way that we can.”

Myre was one of the four students who died in the shooting last month. Early reports indicated that Myre attempted to disarm the shooter during the attack.

The other three victims of the shooting were Hana St. Juliana, Madisyn Baldwin and Justin Shilling. Seven others suffered injuries in the attack, including a teacher.

Michigan to sell Oxford patches for community

Michigan and Michigan State are rivals but they’ve put all of that aside to come together to support the Oxford community. The Wolverines are now selling the Oxford patches that they wore for the Big Ten title game to support the victims and everyone impacted by the shooting.

On the patch were the letters “TM” and the number “42.” Under the lettering, the patches have four hearts, that represent Myre and the other three victims.

Heisman Trophy runner-up Aidan Hutchinson came up with the idea to put a patch on the Wolverines’ uniforms, according to Jim Harbaugh.
