Spring Transfer Portal Update: Wednesday, April 17, 2024

The back and forth continues for Michigan State defensive lineman Simeon Barrow Jr., who has re-entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

Barrow’s intent to enter the portal was revealed by former Spartans’ interim head coach Harlon Barnett in October of last year. Only to withdraw from the transfer portal just three days later and decide to stay in East Lansing. But ahead of Michigan State’s spring game this Saturday, Barrow has had a chance of heart, entering the transfer portal once again during 2024’s spring window.

He’s spent all four seasons of his college career with the Spartans, redshirting as a freshman before becoming a three-year letter winner for Michigan State. Making 34 game appearances with 30 starts where he recorded 110 career tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks, two blocked field goals, one pass break-up, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

Barrow has been a All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection in the past two consecutive seasons for the Spartans, ranking No. 24 on Michigan State’s career sacks list and No. 15 on career sacks yards list with -92 in his career.

Barrow played high school football at Grovetown (GA) where he was a three-star recruit. Ranked the No. 783 overall prospect in the nation and the No. 59 EDGE from the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Michigan State transfer portal activity

Barrow represents the 22nd Michigan State player to enter the transfer portal this offseason, adding 11 players through the transfer portal as well. Given their gains and losses through the portal, Michigan State ranks No. 48 on On3’s 2024 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings with an Index Score of -2. Not the strongest inaugural offseason for new head coach Jonathan Smith.

Michigan State’s biggest losses have been specifically at the quarterback position with Noah KimSam Leavitt, and Katin Houser all departing for new programs. But with former North Dakota quarterback Tommy Schuster joining the Spartans this offseason along with Oregon State QB Aidan Chiles tagging along with Smith to East Lansing, Michigan State can still be rock solid under center this upcoming season.
