After taking official visits to Boston College, Michigan, Missouri, and Nebraska, Amir Herring decided he wanted to stay home and be a Wolverine.

Despite being born and raised in the state of Michigan, this was not an easy decision for Herring. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound interior offensive lineman out of West Bloomfield took his time, and in the end, chose the school he feels best fits him as a student-athlete.

“This was really a very tough decision for me,” Herring told On3. “I had four great official visits and each school stood out to me, but in the end, Michigan was the best fit for me.

“From the academics to athletics, Michigan can challenge me in a great environment and that is why Michigan stood out at the top for me. It is just the best overall fit for me on and off the field.”

Herring felt like part of the Michigan family

Herring, the No. 274 prospect in the On3 Consensus has visited Ann Arbor around a dozen times. He knows the ins and outs of the program and the feeling he had around the staff played a big role in his decision.

“One thing that separated Michigan from others is the family environment. The coaching staff made it feel like home for me.

“From coach Harbaugh to coach Moore to coach Bellamy, and the whole staff, it was a family. I have gotten to know the coaches, the nutritionist, strength and conditioning staff, and I have good relationships with everyone. That connection was important for me.”

Sherrone Moore was the lead recruiter for Herring. The offensive line coach at Michigan and Herring’s relationship is on another level.

“Coach Moore played a big role in my decision. On the first day he got the job as the offensive line coach, he re-offered me. We have talked about a lot of different things and really gotten to know each other.

“He talked to me about what it means to be at Michigan, his approach as a coach there, and why it means so much to be there. He is just a great person that cares about his players. I love his overall philosophy on and off the field and his attention to detail.”

Harbaugh has Michigan going in the right direction

Jim Harbaugh beat Ohio State last season. He led Michigan to the playoffs. Herring is excited about where the program is headed.

“I am going into a championship environment,” Herring said. “Coach Harbaugh is always talking to his players about what they are going to do to beat Ohio State.

“What they did last year was the start. Beating Ohio State and getting into the playoffs was just the beginning. We are going to finish it on the field and win it all.

“I like I am one of the key pieces to Michigan winning a national championship and coach Harbaugh and his staff have the vision and the plan in place. We are going to build off of last year.”

That will be one of Herring’s big goals in Ann Arbor. He wants to be one of the best.

“I am really excited to stay home, do it for Michigan, and I love the direction of the program. My goals are to help Michigan win more Big Ten titles, win national titles, and to help win the Joe Moore Award. I am going into a competitive program. It is strong, everyone competes, and I want to be the best.”
