At one point, Aidan Hutchinson was not exactly somebody Michigan State fans were too fond of. Playing for the Michigan Wolverines, it’s an intense in-state rivalry and usually, more than just pride is on the line. But now a Detroit Lions player, there are some Spartans who are enjoying the success of the former No. 2 overall pick.

Hutchinson was asked about Saturday’s game between Michigan and Michigan State but was not willing to speak on it. He thinks he is able to unite the college rival fans into a group of NFL fans, not wanting to make the green side of the rivalry upset.

“I don’t think I can speak too much of it,” Hutchinson said. “Now that I’m a Lion, I feel like I unite Michigan and Michigan State fans, so I’m not gonna speak too much on it. But I’ll be tuned in. That’s for sure.”

Looking back on his college career, Hutchinson saw Michigan go 2-2 against Michigan State while on campus. His first two seasons were wins for the Maze and Blue, getting double-digit victories. The latter two years were heartbreaking ones, including the 2021 matchup in East Lansing.

In three career appearances against Michigan State, Hutchinson recorded 14 tackles, one tackle for a loss, and a sack. To no surprise, his best performance came a year ago, helping him get to New York City as a Heisman Trophy finalist — despite the loss.

Now, Hutchinson is making both Michigan and Michigan State fans happy with his play with the Lions. The hometown kid already has 4.5 sacks in just six career NFL games, including three against the Washington Commanders.

Most Lions fans will spend most of their Saturday watching the showdown at the Big House. While we know who Hutchinson will be cheering for, he is not trying to personally get the fans riled up.
