A superstar performance at the NFL Combine by Texas receiver Xavier Worthy opened up some old wounds for Michigan fans, who remain upset about how his recruitment unfolded a few years ago.

Worthy clocked the fastest 40-yard dash time in NFL Combine history when he recorded a 4.21 second run in his second attempt.

Michigan fans were left wondering what if.

But the angst over not being able to get Worthy’s enrollment across the finish line back in late 2020 and early 2021 spilled over into some official channels over the weekend, with former offensive coordinator Josh Gattis in the crosshairs for many Michigan fans.

Gattis punched back forcefully.

A little backstory first. Essentially Worthy attempted to enroll at Michigan in the spring semester of 2021 as an early enrollee after committing to Gattis and the Wolverines. However, his high school did not allow early graduations.

So Xavier Worthy’s mother enrolled him in an all-online program for the fall of 2020, seemingly working with Michigan to ensure he’d hit all the boxes he needed to check off to be able to enroll.

At the last minute there was a snag of some sort, and Worthy ended up rethinking his entire plan. He later ended up at Texas.

Many Michigan fans blamed Gattis, as a nasty rumor popped up about his involvement with the family. Gattis has apparently had enough of that, instead shoveling the blame onto the Michigan admissions department.

“It’s time this Bs ends. The slander has crossed the line for too long,” Gattis wrote on Twitter in response to the alleged rumor. “Don’t make excuses for admission…. Or how about look into being on campus during covid. Want to keep on?”

Gattis wasn’t finished responding to a few of the fans that chimed in.

“Sounds like you need others to speak for you,” Gattis wrote. “I’ve taken the high road too long while you & others slander my integrity & family.

“Ask why Admissions said they wouldn’t require a ACT but denied mid year because of a ACT 4 days before enroll. Do you want the violations too? Emails?”

Gattis eventually left Michigan for Miami shortly after the whole ordeal, but that seemingly only made him a bigger target for Michigan fans.

But the former offensive coordinator, who is now at Maryland, apparently has some dirt on the Wolverines.

“[N]o bag just receipts!” Gattis wrote. “The rivals reporters know the truth…. Go dig them up for the ncaa. Have fun but leave my name, family out of your mouth.”

Needless to say there are some parties that aren’t all that happy with the version of events that have been told regarding the Worthy recruitment.

Whatever the case, Xavier Worthy went on to have a tremendous career in college and now he’s famous for a different reason. He’s the fastest man in NFL Combine history.
