Michigan Spring Reaction

Jack Tuttle does have a chance to win the Michigan starting quarterback job, according to head coach Sherrone Moore.

Tuttle’s been around the block. Originally a Utah commit in the Class of 2018, Tuttle ended up at Indiana in 2022 and came to the Wolverines last season.

Being a part of a national championship team can positively affect the mindset of a quarterback and he’ll have his fair shot in the quarterback race.

“Yeah, he’ll be in it,” Moore said. “I mean, we talked about this as a team, as a staff. I mean, the dudes that he backed up are Michael Penix and JJ McCarthy. So he’s got talent, and we’ll see what happens when he gets to fall camp.”

While he did not play at Utah, Tuttle played four seasons at Indiana, in and out of the lineup. He also saw some brief time last season with the Wolverines.

Overall, Tuttle has 1,031 yards, six touchdowns, six interceptions and a 59.8% completion percentage.

As a member of the Class of 2018, Tuttle was a four-star recruit out of San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 25 overall prospect in the state, the No. 14 quarterback in the class and the No. 163 overall prospect in the class.

Moore previously Tuttle one of the veterans of the team in a comedic way. But it’s all love between the coach, the quarterback and the rest of the squad.

“Uncle Jack, they call him,” Moore said of Tuttle. “A guy that has played a lot of football. He’s got a great arm, great ability, can run. Can be a dual-threat guy, but also very cerebral in the pocket — a guy that can do that for you. He’s been very impressive with everything he’s done in the past, and excited for him.”

It seems to be a two-man race between Alex Orji and Davis Warren with Jadyn Davis and Jayden Denegal as the next two guys in the race. Tuttle did not play in the spring game.

The natural assumption is Orji, but Moore didn’t reveal who had the edge and the battle will clearly bleed into fall camp.

“Everybody’s getting better,” Moore said. I think that’ll go into the summer, the fall. We’ll see when we get to fall camp.”

The Maize team beat the Blue team in the spring game 17-7, with the latter being led by Warren and Orji starting for the Maize. Davis served as Orji’s backup while Denegal served as Warren’s backup.
