Taking over as the interim head coach early in the season, Mickey Joseph needed to find someone who he could lean on at Nebraska. Trey Palmer, one of the best transfers in the country, has stepped into that role, both because of his skill and leadership.

While speaking to the media, Mickey Joseph was asked about just how fast Trey Palmer is as a receiver compared to other wide receivers that he’s coached.

“He’s the fastest,” Mickey Joseph said. He’s faster than all those guys, yeah.”

The reporter then asked Mickey Joseph why things didn’t click at LSU if Trey Palmer is such a talented player. Joseph, however, would argue that it was clicking there. The amount of talent around him made it hard to see that, though.

“Well, I think because Justin Jefferson, Terrace Marshall, a lot of NFL guys were in that room, and over there you had to wait. You had to wait. So, he was in a loaded room. A loaded room. If you look at all those guys are in the league. Racey McMath, Derrick Dillon, Stephen Sullivan, all those kids are in the league, so it was clicking there but you had to really come to practice every single day and get it done. If not, that next guy was gonna pass you up,” Mickey Joseph said.

“So, I think he grew up here [Nebraska]. He grew up and he matured here, when he got here, and he understood, okay that’s what I need to do to get better. Because remember now, Trey’s been the best player on the field from the age of five all the way to seventeen, when he got to college. So, it’s hard for him to be like I’ve got to compete every down now.”

Mickey Joseph also made it clear that this isn’t something unique to Trey Palmer. Most great wide receivers that he’s coached, like Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson, have had to learn that too. They all have to make that adjustment from naturally being better to working to stay better.

Mark Whipple praised Trey Palmer

Mickey Joseph isn’t the only coach on staff who has been praising Trey Palmer. Offensive coordinator Mark Whipple also praised him, while also asking for patience when it actually comes to production in the offense.

“We missed him a lot early in the year. He was open a lot of the time. It’s just timing. The system, it takes time. I probably tend to lose my patience because being at a place for three years, you build it up and things that seem easy, some of the things that Kenny [Pickett] did with Jordan [Addison] are some of the same stuff that we’re doing,” Mark Whipple said.

“It just takes time. Some of those things we missed at Purdue, we worked on. You like to add new plays because the defense — it’s kind of an NFL thing, they don’t practice them. We’ve just got to get better at those, which we have this week.”
