The records continue to stack up for Armando Bacot at North Carolina. One of the program’s top-ever players has his name written all throughout the record books, specifically when it comes to rebounding. However, Bacot is slowly moving up in the scoring department and took another step forward on Saturday against Miami.

Bacot entered needing just seven points to surpass Sam Perkins to become No. 3 on North Carolina’s all-time scoring list. While it may have taken longer than expected, Bacot got there in the second half with a ferocious dunk.

Perkins played for the Tar Heels back in the early 1980s and finished his career with 2,145 points. Bacot is now ahead of him and the charge to catch Phil Ford, who is No. 2 on the list, is officially on during the closing stretch of the 2023-2024 season in Chapel Hill.

Tyler Hansbrough is the program’s all-time leading scorer but it’s going to be nearly impossible for Bacot to catch him. Handborough sits at 2,872 points during his legendary career. At least in the near future, nobody is going to come close to his record.

Bacot has had some big games this season and on the biggest stage. In North Carolina’s win against Duke last Saturday, Bacot tied a season-high 25 points thanks to a 10-13 night from the floor. It was his sixth game scoring at least 20 points this year.

Armando Bacot chasing national championship with North Carolina

Bacot may have surpassed Perkins on the scoring list but he still has something the current North Carolina player does not have — a national championship.

Perkins was a member of the 1981-1982 title winning team, playing alongside James Worthy and Michael Jordan. The Tar Heels were nearly ranked No. 1 the entire season as well, finishing the year 32-2 overall. You can add an ACC regular season and tournament championship onto the resume as well, winning everything that was available.

Bacot is hoping he can accomplish something similar this season. North Carolina entered the Miami game No. 3 and is in contention to be a one-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

After coming so close to cutting down the nets in 2022, disappointment came last season after missing the tournament. North Carolina is on a mission to be the final team standing in early April in what would be a fitting finish to Bacot’s career with the Tar Heels.
