North Carolina has struggled as of late, and with struggles usually come distractions and outside noise. That was true for UNC over the previous couple of weeks, with rumors surrounding Tar Heel guards Caleb Love and RJ Davis.

As it turns out, though, those rumors seem to be nothing more than just that. On Thursday, Love tweeted a picture that included him and Davis together.

Despite the recent struggles and noise from the outside, UNC responded in a big way on Saturday with a convincing 91-71 victory over Clemson. Following the win, both Love and Davis spoke to the media and squashed any notion of the two not being on good terms.

“Rumors came out, and that’s just what it was,” Love said. “When you’re losing, they’re trying to throw anything against you to break us apart. Me and RJ [have] been good. We talked about what we needed to talk about. That’s my brother and I love him. So going forward, we’re telling each other we’re not going to trip off of what other people gotta say about us.”

Davis says he, Love were laughing at the rumors

Davis seconded Love’s sentiment after the game, saying that all they could do was laugh at the rumors between them. The two guards came to Chapel Hill together in 2020 and have been teammates for the last three seasons, and that bond wasn’t about to be broken over rumors.

“I mean, the whole time that was going on we were just laughing at it,” Davis added. “People just trying to create a narrative and try to put something out there just because of the way we were losing, the way we were playing. Try to run with a story. We knew it wasn’t true in the locker room, our family members, our friends around us. Just go out there and play without that in the back of our minds, playing together, shows how well connected we are. And we’ve been playing for three years, so it didn’t change our chemistry at all, our connection. We’ve been really good.”

Love and Davis led the charge against Clemson on Saturday. Love put up 23 points with five assists, while Davis had 17 points, three assists and two rebounds. The two shot a combined 10-for-19 from three-point range.

The win might have saved UNC’s NCAA Tournament hopes, as the Tar Heels sit firmly on the bubble with just a couple of weeks left before the regular season comes to an end. The rumors between Davis and Love were assuredly addressed in UNC’s players-only meeting following Tuesday’s loss against Wake Forest, which Davis referred to as the lowest point of the season.

UNC is currently 16-9 overall and 8-6 in ACC play. Another resume-boosting opportunity comes on Tuesday, with the Tar Heels set to host a ranked Miami team inside the Dean E. Smith Center at 7 p.m. ET.
