Mack Brown on his conversations with Gene Chizik: 'They're not good'

No one in Chapel Hill is very pleased with how the last two weeks of North Carolina’s season have gone. Mack Brown is part of that group as well as he has had to have some tough conversations around the Tar Heel’s building.

Brown spoke about what his conversations have been like with UNC DC Gene Chizik after their defense gave up 46 points in a loss to Georgia Tech this past weekend. He didn’t sugarcoat his response as he said they’ve been as bad as someone on the outside might expect them to be.

“They’re what you figure,” said Brown. “I mean they’re not good.”

However, while the defense has been a major talking point, Brown isn’t sure why everyone isn’t looking at the whole picture like he is.

It’s clear that the 77 points allowed to Virginia and Georgia Tech are a big part of why the Tar Heels are on a two-game skid after cracking into the Top-10. Even so, Brown noted the poor second half from North Carolina’s offense in Atlanta as a reason why they’re also getting an earful from him as well.

“The confusing thing is, when you lose, everybody’s negative about everything. That’s just my 47 years in this business,” said Brown. “When you win? People don’t even talk about the negative things that happened. They’re so excited about winning that they let a lot of stuff slide. So my job is to make sure I look at what the problems are and how to fix them. I look at what we do well and see how we can improve those.”

“Everybody is griping about the defense – and they should. Part of that is the offensive problem in the fourth quarter. We didn’t move the ball – nobody is talking about that. That’s facts,” Brown said. “So I have to look at everything. I’ve had the same conversations with the offense in a different way”

It’s a cliché but, in the end, you win as a team and you lose as a team. That’s why everyone at North Carolina is hearing it from Brown after their second straight loss, not just Chizik.

North Carolina announces Tez Walker ‘doing better’, released from hospital after scary hit

Toward the end of North Carolina‘s loss to Georgia Tech, the Tar Heels were trying to quickly score. However, their drive ended when WR Tez Walker took a massive hit and fumbled the ball.

On that hit, Walker also suffered a scary injury. Walker stayed on the ground for several minutes with many teammates seemingly emotional on the field around him. During that time, the UNC medical training staff was working quickly to try and check what was wrong. The hit itself, which Walker never saw coming, was to his torso.

Following the game, it was reported that Walker needed to go to an area hospital for further testing on his injury.

Luckily, UNC has since announced that the hospital released Walker and he flew home on Sunday.

“Tez is doing better, has been released from the hospital, and is flying back to Chapel Hill this morning,” UNC announced.

The exact nature of Walker’s injury is still unclear. However, it’s excellent that he was healthy enough to fly back to campus after the scary hit.
