NFL Draft expert Todd McShay had some high praise for North Carolina graduate transfer running back Ty Chandler on Twitter Monday afternoon. He believes that despite being a late round draft pick, his NFL career won’t be defined by his draft status.

“North Carolina RB Ty Chandler is an underrated back with speed and contact balance as a runner, toughness in pass pro and legitimate downfield pass-catching ability. Some team could get a steal on Day 3 with Chandler,” McShay tweeted.

Here is McShay breaking down some of Chandler’s film in the same tweet.

“Really like him, I think in the fifth- sixth-round area,” McShay said on his First Draft podcast. “When you go back to the games I watched, Miami, Florida, Wake Forest, he was a dynamic performer went over 1,000 yards. I like the way that he follows his blocks. He really strings his cuts together, which is impressive for Ty Chandler.”

Chandler started all 13 games in 2021 for the Tar Heels as a graduate transfer. He was named second-team All-ACC after rushing for an impressive 1,092 yards and 13 touchdowns. He led the North Carolina in both categories while also proving his versatility with 15 receptions for 216 yards and one touchdown.

“Ty means so much to this program,” former Tar Heels quarterback Sam Howell said. “Just the type of person he is. He’s a selfless kid. He just wants what’s best for the team and people respect that about Ty. Ty earned this team’s respect as soon as he got here. He was a great addition to this team. He was definitely something we needed in that running back room this year. He’s really started playing some really good football for us. I’m just super blessed that we added Ty to this team. And I’m thankful for his friendship as well. He’s an awesome guy. He’s had a really good career so I’m glad he was able to have a really good season this year with us.”

His success on the field didn’t start last season, though. Chandler spent his first four seasons at Tennessee, where he left the Volunteers ranked fifth in program history in all-purpose yards with 3,245. His 724 kickoff return yards also rank 14th in school history.

The 2022 NFL Draft is set to begin on April 28 and conclude on April 30 in Paradise, Nevada, but which day will Chandler hear his name called?
