March 5, 2022 will be remembered in the hearts of Tar Heel fans for the rest of time as the day they ruined Mike Krzyzewski and Duke’s fairytale ending of their longtime headman’s retirement tour. North Carolina blew out the Blue Devils 94-81 in an upset win.

Former Tar Heel fan favorite Tyler Hansbrough voiced his opinion on the theatrics Duke put on this season to honor Coach K ahead of his retirement, and especially in his final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

“The only thing I can really compare it to, and I know I’ll take some heat for this, is the Larry David Show,” Hansbrough said this week on ACC Network. “This season, they have a guy that goes to his funeral while he’s still alive so people can tell him how good he is. I thought it was one of those situations. I thought it was funny. Hey, K deserves a lot of respect, but Tar Heel fans, we love that.”

Hansbrough was a UNC great under legendary head coach Roy Williams from 2005-09, leading the program to the National Championship during his senior season (2009) in a season that saw Hansbrough average 22 points per game.

Once the game got underway last Saturday, Duke led by as many as nine points in the game, and held a 41-39 lead at halftime. Despite this, UNC came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, outscoring the Blue Devils 55-40 in the second half. Duke actually out-shot UNC, edging the Tar Heels from the field (49.3% to 48.5%).

UNC made nine three-pointers compared to Duke’s seven, and the Tar Heels had a commanding edge at the free throw line. UNC got to the line 22 times, making 19. Duke got to the line just eight times, making six free throws. Ultimately, UNC outplayed Duke on Saturday, and Krzyzewski thinks that because of that, Duke’s ship was going to sink either way. The Tar Heels were that good in Krzyzewski’s eyes.

“Let me just say, it’s unacceptable,” Krzyzewski said of the loss. “Today was unacceptable, but the season has been very acceptable. And I’ll tell you, this season isn’t over, alright?”

With the ACC Tournament underway in Brooklyn, these two blue-blooded rivals could meet one final time in Coach K’s legendary career. With Duke being the 1-seed and the Tar Heels being the 3, the only chance these two meet again is in the championship game. Certainly a fitting way for Coach K to end his career in ACC play.

“I’m glad this is over,” Krzyzewski said of his final home game. “Let’s just coach and see what the hell happens in the tournaments.”
