At Notre Dame practice on Friday, Deion Colzie was seen in a knee brace. Saturday, Marcus Freeman explained what happened.

Colzie suffered a PCL sprain earlier this week, Freeman told reporters. He didn’t provide a firm timeline for his return, but said the Fighting Irish expect to get him back “soon.”

Colzie appeared in four games last season for Notre Dame, totaling 67 total receiving yards. He’s just the latest Fighting Irish wide receiver to go down with an injury. Earlier Saturday, the program announced Avery Davis suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, just one year after he tore his left ACL.

Freeman will have some decisions to make as he gets settled in for his first season at the helm at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish kick off the 2022 season in big fashion against Ohio State at The Horseshoe in Columbus on Sept. 3.

Freeman also opened up about Davis’ injury and everything he’s battled during his career in South Bend. He also discussed his initial reaction and said he met with Davis in-person to talk about things.

“Gosh, heartbroken for the kid,” Freeman said. “[He] was running – coming back from from obviously an ACL injury on his other knee – was running a jet sweep yesterday and panted it and just, you know, he went down. We didn’t think initially that it was going to be as bad as it was and then after the MRI, I found out that it was an ACL and was just devastating for the kid.

“I spent some time with him yesterday in his apartment, just … what do you say to a kid at that moment? You’re just coming back from an ACL injury, now you tear the other one. But I wanted him know that he’s important to the program, and whatever we can do to support him, we will. It’s a huge blow for, not the [wide receivers] room, just the team. You’re talking about a captain and a guy that just is a great example of what you want our football players to be about, you’re just heartbroken for the kid.”
