Notre Dame head basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry has been busy assembling his staff in South Bend, Indiana. On Friday evening, the word became official that former Virginia assistant coach Kyle Getter was joining Shrewsberry at Notre Dame as his associate head coach, according to Preston Willett of CBS19 Sports in Charlottesville.

It’s a massive pickup for the Fighting Irish and a big loss for the Cavaliers.

Getter was a tireless recruiter for the Virginia basketball staff and had excellent relationships with many people around the program. He’s also excellent with the X’s and O’s side of the game. He was a beloved figure by everyone around the program, according to people who are very close to the program.

Getter and Shrewsberry both know each other from Hanover College in Indiana, their alma mater. Getter leaving for Notre Dame leaves a spot for Virginia head coach Tony Bennett to fill on his staff. Their search for a replacement is already underway.

He just wrapped up his fifth season working for Bennett and the Cavaliers. Getter had spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach for the Cavaliers. He also spent three seasons as UVA’s Director of Recruiting/Player Development.

Since he joined the Cavaliers’ coaching staff, he was a part of Virginia’s magical march to the 2019 National Championship, two regular season championships in 2019 and 2021; and a second-place finish in the ACC in 2020. Virginia also finished as the Co-ACC Champions for the 2022-2023 regular season, sharing the title with the Miami Hurricanes.

Getter’s decision to leave for Notre Dame hurt Virginia with Robert Jennings, one of their top transfer portal candidates they were recruiting. Jennings was quite close with Getter, and once he learned of his decision to leave for Notre Dame, it tipped the scales for him to return to Texas Tech, per Kevin Cook.

Getter joined the Virginia coaching staff after serving for three years under another former Cavalier assistant, Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay.

While at Hanover, Getter served as both a student assistant and assistant men’s basketball coach from 1999-2002. He helped the team compile a three-year record of 60-18 and two HCAC championships. Getter has also spent time at a variety of other stops across the college basketball landscape over the years, including Marshall, Wright State, Liberty, Radford, VCU, Walsh University (Ohio), and the University of Dayton.

He spent from 2009-2011 at VCU, serving on Shaka Smart’s staff during one of the most successful times in program history. During his time there, the Rams won 55 games over two seasons.
