Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer is one of the nation’s top tight end prospects. Tonight against Florida State he showed the nation why.

He hauled in this 41-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Jack Coan.

After Notre Dame’s first drive against Florida State, Mayer has already hauled in three catches for 67 yards and a touchdown.

As a true freshman last season, he hauled in 42 catches for 450 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

One of the nation’s best

After he impressed in his first year with the Fighting Irish, Mayer won several awards, including being named to The Athletic’s Freshman All-America Team. He was named to the Pro Football Focus Team of the Week at Pittsburgh on October 24th.

Many people are touting Mayer as the best tight end in college football, including ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit.

He’s blessed with an exceptional combination of size, speed, and hands for the position.

ESPN’s Todd McShay had this to say about Michael Mayer after the Irish’s big win against Clemson in 2020.

Michael Mayer’s a freak by the way, he seemed to always make a big play when they needed a third down-and-finish.”

Michael Mayer High School Career

Mayer was a highly touted tight end coming out of high school, rated as a four-star recruit by all recruiting services. In 2019, he was named the Kentucky Gatorade Kentucky Football Player of the Year.

On defense, he tallied 102.5 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and four interceptions. He returned one of those interceptions for a touchdown. The gifted tight end prospect played for Covington Catholic in Independence, Kentucky.

Mayer is definitely a name to watch among the nation’s top tight end prospects. It will be fascinating to watch his career develop from college all the way to the National Football League.
