C.J. Stroud goes in-depth on his relationship with coach Ryan Day

C.J. Stroud had a standout season for Ohio State in 2021 and quickly caught the college football world’s attention – there’s no question about it. Throwing for 4,435 yards and 44 touchdowns compared to only six interceptions, Stroud – who finished the season with a total QBR of 91.6 – led the Buckeyes to an 11-2 campaign, which was capped off with a Rose Bowl win over Utah.

Now, coming into his second season as Ohio State’s signal-caller, Stroud should be able to be even more successful – especially considering that he already has one highly successful year under his belt. Meeting with the media after a spring practice earlier this week, Stroud went in-depth on his relationship with Buckeyes’ head coach Ryan Day and how much it has progressed.

“It’s kind of something similar, but I think it’s a little bit more mature,” Stroud said. “Like, he understands I know the game and I’ve been out there before, so I definitely feel like he’s putting more on my plate. It feels good to know that somebody played the game and they’re coaching you to play the right way, so I definitely appreciate him for trying to help me out each and every day.

“Honestly, he doesn’t want me to do anything crazy – which I respect. Maybe look like it’s crazy on TV, but he really wants me to stay routined because that’s what longevity is in your career. Just being consistent and taking the board and stuff, which I don’t struggle at it – but I’m trying to excite myself and trying to get better.”

While Stroud – a former On3 Consensus four-star recruit – made it clear that he and his head coach have built a strong bond, Ohio State looks to have what it takes to be successful again this upcoming season. Although the Buckeyes still have to finish up spring practice, go through summer workouts and then fall camp, the team is scheduled to kickoff its season on Saturday, Sept. 3 against Notre Dame in Columbus.
