Andy Staples Breaking Down why Ohio State Will be Better in 2024 | 01.25.24

Pete Thamel isn’t optimistic about Ohio State’s offensive front. On Thursday, the ESPN analyst weighed in on the Buckeyes’ offensive line ahead of the 2024 campaign.

“If there’s an on-field concern for Ohio State next season that’s not addressed, it’s their offensive line,” Thamel said. “Their offensive line was abysmal against Missouri and it got overwhelmed at times against Michigan.

“That has been an area of weakness in the program in recent seasons. Some people snickered at Seth McLaughlin going from ‘Bama to there because he had all those snap issues in the Rose Bowl. But they need they need upgrades there in that spot.”

Ohio State gave up four sacks in its 14-3 loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. In total, the Tigers racked up 10 tackles for loss against the Buckeyes. As Thamel mentioned, it wasn’t the only time in the 2023 campaign Ohio State’s offensive line was lackluster.

Ohio State allowed 23 sacks this past season, ranking No. 45 in the country. Former Alabama offensive lineman Seth McLaughlin is the only offensive lineman Ohio State has added in the transfer portal thus far. However, he brings a depth of experience.

He started all 14 games at center for the Crimson Tide this past season. Despite McLaughlin’s impressive experience, he received some negative attention when he struggled to snap the ball against Michigan in the College Football Playoff.

A new start for Seth McLaughlin

On3’s Andy Staples recently offered a unique perspective on McLaughlin’s move to OSU.

“The offensive line has to be better,” Staples said. “If Seth McLaughlin still has some issues snapping, you can play him at guard and you will have a really effective guard. Because no one never had any qualms on Seth McLaughlin’s blocking.”

No matter what position he plays, McLaughlin is ready to remind the nation why he was an every-snap starter for one of the best teams in the country.

“The plan Coach Frye has put together for me is one that will maximize my ability as a football player,” McLaughlin told Lettermen Row. “I’m happy to play wherever Coach Day and Coach Frye think puts the team in the best position to succeed.

“Obviously I’m coming in here with a bad taste in my mouth from that game,” he stated. “My No. 1 goal for this season is to come in and earn the respect of my new teammates. I will do whatever I can to help the team be successful and win games.”
