Oklahoma Faces Make Or Break Season In Brent Venables Second Year With Sooners Football (1)

If an Oklahoma player caused a penalty from the sideline, head coach Brent Venables likely would not be too happy. Monday practice would not be too kind to them, facing some kind of punishment. So when Venables committed a penalty of his own, there was no change in the accountability system.

During his radio show, Venables revealed he paid the price for his mistake on Monday. Venables wound up doing 100 burpees — not exactly the easiest thing in the world. But now, he will remember to stand a few steps back on the sideline, keeping the Sooners out of trouble.

“Brent Venables said on tonight’s Coaches Show that he did 100 up-downs (burpees) at practice today as self-punishment for his sideline interference penalty on Saturday,” Toby Rowland of THE REF 94.7FM/1400AM said via Twitter.

Venables is famous for having a get-back coach, especially during his time as the Clemson defensive coordinator. Once he became the head coach at Oklahoma, the get-back coach went away. And for the first time during his tenure in Norman, Venables probably wishes he had one.

Due to the penalty, SMU wound up scoring a touchdown. It wound up being the Mustangs’ only scoring play of the night, with quarterback Preston Stone connecting with Stone Eby on a two-yard pass. After the TD, Oklahoma’s lead was cut to three, being a critical moment in the game.

Since the Sooners went on to get a win, Venables was able to have some fun with the moment after the game. He cracked a smile when asked a question on a penalty, blaming the ref for being in his way, not the other way around.

The joking mood may have not applied had SMU gotten a come-from-behind win against a ranked Oklahoma team.

“I was in the white and he ran into me,” Venables jokingly said during his postgame press conference on Saturday. “I don’t deserve a warning.”

Oklahoma is getting on the road for Week 3, having a rare game at Tulsa. This will mark the Sooners’ fourth time playing at the Golden Hurricane since the turn of the century. A fun in-state game for both programs.

Hopefully, Venables is able to take a few steps back on the sideline. Taking a few yards on his behalf is probably not in the game plan for Saturday. Otherwise, you can count on 100 more burpees taking place during next Monday’s practice.
