Queen Creek (Ariz.) Casteel four-star cornerback Jeremiah Newcombe has committed to Oklahoma. He announced the news over Twitter on Saturday night.

The Sooners offered Newcombe on Nov. 1. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound defensive back visited Norman this weekend ahead of his pledge.

“I would like to thank my family, friends, and coaches for supporting me throughout this whole process,” Newcombe wrote. “I would also like to thank my dad for everything he had done for me from the start. You have helped me in so many ways and pushed me to be the best I can be as an athlete, student, and a young man standing on my own two feet. I would also like to thank my teachers for helping and guiding me.

“After thinking this through and talking with my family I would like to announce my commitment to the University of Oklahoma!!! #BoomerSooner.”

Newcombe is the No. 282 overall prospect and No. 22 cornerback in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 6 player in Arizona.

On3 rates Newcombe higher than other recruiting services, according to the Industry Comparison. Per the 2024 On300, Newcombe is the No. 161 overall prospect, No. 17 cornerback and the No. 4 player in Arizona.

“I’m looking forward to making a big impact,” Newcombe told On3’s Chad Simmons about his goals in college football. “If I can be an asset to the team, what I can bring to the table and also, what I look for in a college is if they have my major.”

Oklahoma is looking to continue recruiting success this cycle

Newcombe’s commitment is a major one for head coach Brent Venables and his staff. That is because the four-star is Oklahoma’s first pledge of the 2024 cycle.

Last year, the Sooners flourished on the recruiting trail, finishing with the No. 7 class in the 2024 On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. It included three five-star prospects, including Denton (Texas) Guyer Five-Star Plus+ quarterback Jackson Arnold.

While Oklahoma is off to a slower start in the 2024 class than some other programs, there is a chance it finishes very strong. The Sooners are in contention for some of the top juniors in the country, including Lee’s Summit (Mo.) Lee’s Summit North five-star defensive lineman Williams Nwaneri, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy five-star defensive lineman David Stone and Midlothian (Texas) four-star wide receiver Bryant Wesco.
