4-star safety Reggie Powers visiting Oklahoma this weekend
Dayton (Ohio) Centerville four-star safety Reggie Powers decommitted from Michigan State amidst the mess in its football program last month, and Oklahoma was one of the programs that had been circling him.
UCLA extended Powers an offer a week before he decommitted, and a few days earlier, the Sooners joined the fray. Now, Powers is set to visit Norman for the first time this weekend, tweeting on Saturday that he will be in town for the Sooners’ game.
The Sooners have a top-10 class in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings and a pair of safety commits already, but are looking to build even more depth in the secondary this cycle.
Powers is the No. 213 overall prospect and No. 16 safety in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
On3was the first to rank him as a four-star prospect last spring, and he was one of the biggest risers in the entire country over the summer and early fall.
“Reggie Powers has always been an enforcer in the run game,” On3 Scouting and Rankings assistant Cody Bellaire said. “His ability to trigger and play downhill is textbook for the safety position. And as a senior, he has added another tool to his bag; center fielder. He has displayed the range and long speed necessary in order to thrive as a middle of the field safety at the next level. If Powers can maintain consistency in developing his skillset in the back half and continue playing with discipline around the box, he will be a dominant three-down weapon in the secondary.
Sooners are hot on the recruiting trail right now
After big months of August and September, Oklahoma has continued to scoop up commitments in October. Just in the past two days, the Sooners have landed three-star linebacker Michael Boganowski and cornerback Devon Jordan.
Like with Powers’ recruitment, head coach Brent Venables was a big factor in both Boganowski and Jordan picking the Sooners.
“Coach Venables is building Oklahoma Football back to that national contender,” Boganowski told On3’s Chad Simmons. “Seeing his past and his resume, I believe he will get it done at Oklahoma. He has the team playing great this season and the program is on its way back up. He is a high-energy guy who loves the game that will pull the best out of me. Coach Hall is a student of the game. He is very smart about football and I know he will make me better too. Oklahoma is a great place to be.”
