Oklahoma has extended an offer to the 2023 cycle’s No. 1 safety in Hoschton (Ga.) Mill Creek five-star safety Caleb Downs.

Downs is the No. 9 player in the country, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Only one player from the Peach State is ranked ahead of Downs in the On3 Consensus. That player is Alpharetta (Ga.) Milton Five-Star Plus+ defensive lineman Lebbeus Overton.

Downs may soon earn that Five-Star Plus+ designation as well. He is ranked no lower than 32nd by any of the four major recruiting media companies.

“The 5-foot-11.5, 185-pound Downs is a tough, instinctive safety that displays high-end playmaking ability. He’s not only a ball hawk in coverage but will close quickly and strike in the run game. He possesses very good eyes and awareness,” On3 National Analyst Gerry Hamilton said.

Caleb Downs visited Georgia yesterday

Caleb Downs made a visit to in-state Georgia on Saturday. He previously told On3’s Chad Simmons that the Bulldogs had are recruiting him “as hard as anyone.”

“Coach Kirby Smart, coach (Will) Muschamp, coach (Jahmile) Addae, and a lot of the staff is recruiting me,” Downs told On3. “The Georgia staff knows how to develop defensive backs, get them drafted, and that stands out to me.”

The Bulldogs have nine commits in the 2023 cycle, six of whom are four-star recruits. Grovetown (Ga.) four-star cornerback Marcus Washington, Fairburn (Ga.) Langston Hughes four-star offensive tackle Bo Hughley, Santa Rosa Beach (Fla.) South Walton four-star tight end Pearce Spurlin and Milton (Fla.) four-star wide receiver Raymond Cottrell are the four Georgia verbals ranked in the top 100 of the On3 Consensus.
