Oklahoma jumps in latest On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings
The past five days have been fruitful for Oklahoma’s 2025 recruiting class, with the Sooners landing not one, not two, but three commitments in that span.
Despite it only being April, they’ve already got a strong start, with 13 total commitments — seven of whom rank as four-star prospects — and a No. 11 ranking in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.
The latest addition came on Wednesday when four-star Upper Marlboro (Md.) defensive lineman Trent Wilson, chose the Sooners over Ohio State, Penn State and Texas.
“I had been going everywhere and seeing what it is like out there,” Wilson told On3’s Chad Simmons. “I was always looking for the fit, and even before I got to Oklahoma, I liked what I knew about Coach Venables and Coach Todd Bates off of my research. Then when I got there, I knew that was it.
Oklahoma Class Breakdown
Offense and in-state targets were the focus early on in the 2025 cycle for OU, with five of their first nine commitments hailing from the Sooner State and seven expected to play on offensive at the next level. Co-offensive coordinator Seth Littrell has his quarterback with four-star Kevin Sperry out of the Oklahoma City area. His pledge has helped spur on a string of receiver commitments, led by in-state four-star Elijah Thomas Texas-based three-star Gracen Harris. The Sooners added another key piece to the puzzle on March 29 with the addition of four-star running back Tory Blaylock, who chose OU over Texas, Ohio State and a number of others.
On the defensive side, the Sooners have three early commitments from linebacker Marcus James, EDGE Alexander Shieldnight and defensive lineman Ka’Mori Moore. They’ve added to that in a big way in the past week, landing commitments from four-star defensive lineman Trent Wilson, four-star cornerback Maliek Hawkins, and three-star safety Marcus Wimberly.
Top Sooners Offensive Commit: WR Elijah Thomas
OU beat out Oklahoma State, Alabama, and Texas A&M for Thomas, one of the most dynamic players in the Sooner State, back in late July.
“The love everyone was showing me when I was there made me feel welcome and made it feel like home,” he told On3’s Hayes Fawcett. “Benton Duby, Coach V, Coach Jones they all made me feel welcome. When I went to other facilities I didn’t feel what I felt at OU.”
Thomas ranks as the No. 134 player in the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also checks in as the No. 16 wide receiver and the No. 3 player in the state of Oklahoma.
Top Oklahoma Defensive Commit: DL Trent Wilson
Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State and Texas A&M were the top four schools for Wilson, one of the nation’s top defensive linemen out of the Washington D.C. area. But it was the Sooners — by far the furthest program from home — who ultimately landed his commitment.
“I got up there, things got better, and I felt at home,” he told On3’s Chad Simmons. “I had a different feeling there. Nowhere I went stood out to me the way Oklahoma did. That is when I knew.”
Wilson is the No. 94 overall prospect and No. 9 defensive lineman in the On300 rankings. The On3 Scouting and Rankings team is higher on him than every other service and writes this about him as a recruit:
“Stout interior defensive line prospect whose suddenness and pad level allows him to forklift blockers consistently. Measured in at 6–foot-3, 270 pounds during summer campus visits. Possess some impressive bend and flexibility for a player with his stature. Explosive get off and burst off the line of scrimmage. Tremendous power throughout his frame. Can shock blockers at the point with his striking and able to sink his weight and anchor. Versatile interior defender who can kick inside to nose or stay in space as a 3-technique. Physical development while maintaining burst and explosion will determine his true ceiling at the next level.”
