The Oklahoma Sooners landed transfer offensive lineman McKade Mettauer on Monday. The junior guard opted to transfer out of California last week and already found his new home.

Since arriving on campus in 2019, Mettauer was a staple across the Cal offensive line. He started in 26 of 27 possible games, including every matchup during the shortened 2020 season and the 2021 season.

Mettauer has played both left and right guard and will be a versatile piece for new Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables. The Sooners could be losing starting left guard Marquis Hayes so the addition is a heads-up move by the new staff. He joins Missouri tight end Daniel Parker Jr. as OU’s second transfer addition so far this post-season.

The 6-foot-4, 284-pound lineman was rated a three-star prospect on the On3 Consensus coming out of high school. A native of The Woodlands, Texas, he was a top 100 prospect from within the state. He had programs such as Houston, Missouri, and SMU after his signature as a recruit before inking with the Golden Bears.

Transfer Portal Boom

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the school does not have to offer their scholarship back if they choose to return.
