Emeka Megwa has had an unusual start to his college football career. After leaving high school a year early, the former four-star running back enrolled yearly to play with the Washington Huskies. He did not appear in a game for the Huskies this past season, taking a redshirt.

From there, Megwa decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal and look for a new program to play for. Based on his Instagram bio, he has found a new spot, committing to play for head coach Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners. Moving closer to his home state of Texas, Megwa is now enrolled in classes for the Big 12 school.

Originally coming out of high school, Megwa held an offer from Oklahoma but Lincoln Riley was running the show. Current offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby was at Ole Miss during his recruitment and the Rebels had offered the running back. With Lebby now in Norman, the relationship has come full circle.

Coming out of high school, Megwa was ranked a top 25 running back in the country in the 2021 recruiting class. He was just on the outside of the top 50 in the state of Texas, coming in at No. 53. Megwa will now be taking his talents to Norman, hoping to contribute in what’s an already packed running back room for Oklahoma.

Transfer portal background information for Emeka Megwa, Oklahoma

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at the Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal is done through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database and everything is off and running. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request and that request cannot be refused.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, the current scholarship no longer has to be honored. In other words, if a player enters the portal but decides to stay, the school is not obligated to provide a scholarship anymore.

The database is a normal database, sortable by a variety of topics, including (of course) sport and name. A player’s individual entry includes basic details such as contact info, whether the player was on scholarship and whether the player is transferring as a graduate student.
