On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine: Oklahoma trending for Daylan Smothers

Charlotte (N.C.) West Charlotte four-star running back Daylan Smothers is announcing his commitment on July 14. He is deciding between Alabama, Florida State, North Carolina State and Oklahoma. According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, the Sooners have a commanding lead for Smothers’ services at 95% following an expert prediction. The Wolfpack have the second-highest odds at 1.7%, while the Seminoles have a 1.4% chance of landing Smothers.

The 5-foot-10.5, 175 pound tailback took an official visit to Norman on June 3. He also officially visited Florida State and North Carolina State during June.

“It was just an amazing environment to be in I’ll say nothing that didn’t stand out,” Smothers told On3’s Jeremy Johnson after his Oklahoma official visit. “The family feeling from the coaching staff is definitely standing out. Mostly everybody there is very kind and outgoing…It’s getting back to the old culture and the vision (head) coach (Brent) Venables has to get them back on top is the goal. You can honestly tell that’s everybody’s motivation.”

Recruiting impact if Smothers commits to Oklahoma

Smothers is the No. 272 overall prospect and No. 13 running back in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. On3’s rankings rate him even higher as the No. 194 overall prospect and the No. 8 running back.

If Smothers commits to Oklahoma, he would be the Sooners’ second running back pledge following Denton (Tex.) Ryan three-star running back Kalib Hicks. Oklahoma’s class is currently No. 13 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and contains six four-stars and eight three-stars. The group is led by Denton (Tex.) Guyer four-star quarterback Jackson Arnold, the No. 34 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus.

“Productive rusher with a well-rounded skill set. A tough runner who accounted for over 1,700 yards and 30 touchdowns as a junior. Reads his blocks and shows vision in working to the second level. Has natural cutback ability. Plays bigger than his size and fights through contact. Shows a solid burst with the ability to rip off chunk gains. A good receiver out of the backfield. Played for one of the top high school programs in North Carolina prior to transferring to West Charlotte ahead of his junior season. Smaller than most top running back prospects, measuring at 5-foot-10.5, 173 pounds prior to his senior season. Will need to gain mass in order to carry a substantial workload at the college level.”
